Seven Hotspots That Will Dominate Trump’s First Asia Summit
Donald Trump, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin are among 21 leaders meeting in Vietnam this week for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Together they represent 40 percent of the world’s population and 60 percent of its economy. Here’s a look at the hot issues around the globe that are likely to dominate discussions: North Korea’s Nukes The biggest threat to regional stability is North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, but finding a way to defuse it remains elusive. It’s rising tensions in the Gulf, with Saudi Arabia blaming Iran-backed Yemeni rebels for an attempted missile attack on Riyadh’s international airport on […]
Supreme Court won’t hear arguments on legality of travel ban
Washington (CNN)The Supreme Court said Tuesday it won’t hear oral arguments on the legality of President Donald Trump’s travel ban — for now — but the legal fight over efforts to halt entry to the United States from certain countries is far from settled. “Because those provisions of the order have “expired by [their] own terms,” the appeal no longer presents a “live case or controversy,” the justices wrote in a one-page ruling.
Trump demands Congress terminate diversity immigration lottery
Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump, during a White House Cabinet meeting Wednesday, said he wants to terminate the Diversity Visa Lottery, a program that distributes around 50,000 visas to countries where there is a low rate of immigration to the US. He added: “We’re going to quickly as possible get rid of chain migration and move to a merit-based system.” Trump also labeled the alleged attacker an “animal” to reporters Wednesday, and said the United States must “get much tougher” with terror suspects. Trump called for “quick justice” and “strong justice” for terror suspects. “What we have right now is a […]
Supreme Court cancels travel ban oral arguments
Washington (CNN)In an unexpected announcement, the Supreme Court said it will not hear oral arguments on the travel ban as scheduled on October 10. This is not a ruling about the constitutionality or a final decision from the court: The one-page unsigned announcement simply removes the case from the oral argument schedule for the moment.
Trump Balks at Showing Classified Report Backing Travel Ban
President Donald Trump says those challenging the latest version of his travel ban in court can’t see a report explaining why he targeted immigrants from seven nations because it’s secret. The government on Friday told a Hawaii federal judge who demanded disclosure of the report that it’s classified and should remain off-limits as evidence in the court battle. That judge blocked a previous version of the president’s immigration restrictions amid a fierce debate over national security and discrimination. U.S. Supreme Court case: “The Executive should not have to disclose its ‘real’ reasons for deeming nationals of a particular country a […]
Trump Weighs Replacing His Travel Ban With Tailored Restrictions
President Donald Trump is weighing replacing his ban on travelers entering the U.S. from six predominantly Muslim nations with a set of more specific and tailored restrictions based, in part, on how much information countries share with the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security has sent Trump recommendations for entry restrictions and additional visa requirements based on shortcomings in the information each country shares with the U.S. and an assessment of the risk of terrorist infiltration the nation poses, administration officials told reporters on Friday. The changes could be put in place as soon as this weekend, with a new […]
14 issues Trump is sidelining to focus on the NFL
(CNN)President Donald Trump devoted much of the online portion of his weekend to attacking NFL player-protesters and boosting calls for a boycott of the league. Millions of people on the island have been without power, cut off from the world — and the aid they desperately need — since Hurricane Maria struck last week. Officials there describe an “apocalyptic” scene. Relief is now beginning to trickle in, but the rebuilding figures to be a years-long process. Trump last tweeted about Puerto Rico on September 20. “War” with North Korea? Trump didn’t only troll the NFL and its protesting players this […]
Hawaii judge blocks Trump’s latest travel ban
(CNN)A federal judge in Hawaii has blocked President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban one day before it was set to take effect. The President’s executive order “suffers from precisely the same maladies as its predecessor: it lacks sufficient findings that the entry of more than 150 million nationals from six specified countries would be ‘detrimental to the interests of the United States,'” Watson wrote.
