Venezuelan sanctions without diplomacy will fail

(CNN)Despite condemnation from 40 countries and even the Pope, Venezuela’s ruling party installed its new assembly last weekend. Choosing as its head former Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez, a loyal follower of President Nicolas Maduro, the assembly focused on efforts to stifle any dissent, beginning deliberations to undermine the opposition controlled legislature and restructure the government. As Venezuela descends into full authoritarianism, closing down any space for the political opposition and threatening basic freedom of expression and human rights, the United States should be pressed to do more. But expanding individual sanctions will do little to change anything on the ground. […]
